Sell-Out Musical “Becoming Garland Avenue” Returns in April 2020, Tickets On Sale Now

“Becoming Garland Avenue”, the musical drama that played to a sell-out audience last April at Plaza Theatre Downtown Garland, will be performed again in a revised version on April 18 and 19 at 3 p.m.

The play is set 22 years after the side-by-side communities of Duck Creek and Embree united to be incorporated as Garland. It tells what happens when the city experiences growing pains, but not every citizen initially is a fan of growth. A crusading newspaper editor and his bright daughter/apprentice play major roles in the outcome. A church split that found congregants at odds with each other adds a touch of intrigue.

About “Becoming Garland Avenue”

As a “revival”, the play will feature two new original songs, including a children’s chorus, six new characters, modified scenery, and a refreshed script that sheds even more light on this particular period in early Garland history and its leaders.

Several downtown Garland businesses of the 1913 era, the period in which the play is set, are depicted in the script, as are downtown business leaders of that day. The stage backdrop features a depiction of downtown Garland as it existed in the early days.

The play features 10 original songs and an original script based on actual Garland events that happened in December 1912 and January 1913.

Almost all of the cast and crew, that consisted of numerous residents of Travis College Hill and surrounding Garland neighborhoods near downtown Garland, have signed back on for the 2020 performance. The Plaza seats 350 patrons. Last year’s showing tickets sold out two weeks early.
